One of the BIGGEST stressors when it comes to family photos is deciding WHAT TO WEAR. I hear this from parents all the time. Dressing yourself AND every member of your family in outfits that look nice, feel comfortable, and coordinate well can take some forethought! So, I asked my friend Hayley Tanous, a personal stylist based in Central Arkansas, to share some tips for things to consider when planning our family photos outfits! Also, enjoy some the branding photos I took for her – she is a stunner, a kind human, and so talented!!!!

Planning outfits for family photos can feel daunting. You want to look coordinated without being overly matchy-matchy, and, most importantly, you want to feel comfortable and confident. As a personal stylist, I’m here to share a few simple tips to help you put together outfits that look amazing and photograph beautifully!

1. Focus on Flattering Your Shape
The goal when choosing your outfit is to create a balanced silhouette that flatters your body shape. A simple trick is to define your waistline. For example, if you have a more rounded body shape, opt for flare or bootcut jeans to balance your proportions. Dresses that cinch at the waist or tops with subtle structure also work wonders.

2. Pick a Cohesive Color Palette
Choosing colors can be overwhelming, but here’s a tip: Stick to 2-3 main colors and 2-3 neutral shades that complement each other. This will give your outfits a coordinated, put-together feel without being too matchy. One timeless combo is muted rust with a soft seafoam green—both are versatile and look great in various settings, whether indoors or outdoors.
Avoid overly bright colors or loud prints (unless that’s your vibe—do you!), as they might distract from the real stars of the photo: your family! Instead, opt for muted, harmonious tones that let your personalities shine through.

3. Mix Textures and Patterns
A great way to add visual interest to your photos without looking too busy is to mix textures and patterns. Balance is key! If one person is wearing a gauze dress, another could wear a smooth jersey knit to create contrast without clashing. Similarly, mix large and small patterns to balance the look. For instance, if mom is wearing a larger floral print, baby girl might wear a small gingham in coordinating colors. Avoid things that feel too stuffy or uncomfortable. Keep it light, flowy, and breathable, especially if your photos are outside.

Final Thoughts
The key to feeling confident in family photos is to wear outfits that feel like you—just a slightly elevated version! Choose colors, patterns, and silhouettes that flatter your body and harmonize together. Remember, your goal is to let your family’s connection and personality shine, with your outfits being the perfect supporting cast!
