Gimme that

The trees are starting to show off, the air smells like pumpkin bread, and I’ve officially traded my iced coffee for a latte (okay, fine… sometimes both in the same day). If you’re already daydreaming about cozy layers and wondering what to wear for fall family photos, I’m here to help!!

Fall in Central Arkansas is my absolute favorite — not just for the cozy sweaters and golden sunsets, but because it’s one of the BEST times of year for family photos.

The light is softer, the colors are richer, and we’re not melting in 90-degree heat while pretending we’re having fun. If you’ve got a fall session coming up and are staring into your closet wondering, what do we wear!?, I’m here to help!!

Why Fall is the Best Time for Family Photos

Arkansas in the fall is pure magic. We get that golden glow in the afternoons, the leaves are showing off in their jewel tones, and you can actually layer without looking like you’ve run a marathon before we take our first picture!

And bonus? Your fall photos have instant cozy holiday-card energy!!

Let’s Talk Fall Family Portrait Color Palette

Choosing colors is the first step to stress-free outfit planning. From there, it’s just mixing and matching.

Earthy Tones = Instant Fall Vibes

Here are my go-tos that look amazing against Arkansas’s fall backdrops:

  • Burnt orange (pumpkin spice without the calories)
  • Camel and warm beige
  • Mustard yellow
  • Olive green
  • Cream or ivory
  • Deep teal
  • Plum or wine
  • Chocolate brown

These tones keep your photos warm, cozy, and timeless.

Mix, Don’t Match

If everyone wears the exact same color, your photos will look flat. Instead, start with a couple of neutrals, then sprinkle in one or two of those gorgeous fall tones.

Example: Mom in a deep plum dress, Dad in a camel sweater, the kids in cream and mustard accents. It feels coordinated without feeling like a family uniform.

Prints & Patterns

Small florals, subtle plaids, or textured knits? Yes, please. Loud, oversized patterns? Not so much — we want the focus on your faces, not your shirt!

Outfit Ideas for the Whole Crew

Mom Goes First (Trust Me)

Pick your outfit first. If you feel confident and comfortable, it shows in every photo.
Think:

  • Flowy midi or maxi dress (solid or small-print)
  • Cozy cardigan or denim jacket layered on top
  • Boots or cute flats
  • Jewelry that feels like you — from bold earrings to a delicate pendant

Dads Made Easy

We’re keeping it simple and classic:

  • Dark jeans or chinos
  • Henley, crewneck sweater, or button-down
  • A vest or jacket for layering
  • Boots or clean sneakers

Kids Need to Move

If they can’t run, twirl, or climb into your arms, it’s a no.

  • Leggings under dresses
  • Sweaters over button-downs
  • Soft fabrics they won’t fuss about
  • Fun extras like a beanie, bow, or scarf to show their personality

Texture + Layers = Photographer Candy

Fall is the season for adding depth to your photos.

  • Textures: chunky knits, corduroy, lace, velvet
  • Layers: scarves, jackets, vests, cardigans
  • Accessories: felt hats, beanies, leather belts

Pro tip: layer enough for interest, not so much that you feel like the Michelin Man!

What to Skip for Fall Family Portraits

A few outfit “don’ts” to keep your photos looking timeless:

  • Neon anything (unless you want to look like a human highlighter – then you do you!)
  • Big logos or character tees
  • Everyone in the same plaid shirt (I’ve seen it… it’s a lot)
